This is an early piece, but it's still one of my favorites. It's a Native American man who is struggling to understand the place of the cross in Christianity. He's drawn to the story this new religion tells, especially the willingness of a man to sacrifice himself for the sake of his people. But he doesn't understand the symbol. In his world, the symbols are Mother Earth and Father Sky, the vision quest and the peace pipe.
He's puzzled by the cross, and how a symbol of such pain and suffering can be emblematic of one's faith. And finally he realizes the gift is not the cross. It's the love.
